Obituary

Ruby D. Porter born October 31, 1936 in Sumter, SC to the late Alphonso and Lottie Porter. She transitioned from earth to heaven on April 27, 2020. Mother Day is preceded in death by her parents, sisters Ruth, Bertha, Ometa, Christine, Geneva, and Minnie; brothers James, Samuel and Alphonso Jr.

In 1961, Ruby married now divorced Sylvester Day. Out of the union she leaves to cherish her memories three children Michelle Gaston (late Thomas), Charlotte Lawson (Roger) and Cyril (Carmen). Seven grandchildren Clarence (Natasha), Anthony (Shevonne), Cory (Tracey), Malcolm, Brooke, Briona and Kyle) and 13 great grandchildren. Two sisters Frances and Anna and two brothers Birnie and Arthur. Her legacy also includes a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ruby retired from Toledo Public Schools after 25 years of service as a miscellaneous laborer. Ruby gave her life to Christ at an early age and lived what she believed. She was a courageous women of faith that loved God. The Word of God reassures those of us left behind that our Mother is now resting in the arms of our Lord Savior. We will mourn our loss but cherish her memory.

Our mother’s life was her testimony. She lived her faith by serving God through serving His people. She was first and foremost a wonderful mother, she served on the Mother’s Board at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. Her volunteerism included feeding the hungry at the Kitchen for the Poor, being a caregiver for those sick in her community and serving in the City Wide Mission. There are many left behind that call our mother “friend.” She strongly believed in fellowship with other believers. She walked, talked and bowled with her people.

She shared her gift of baking by creating the best German Chocolate cake ever! Her Pound Cake and Rolls were legendary. She sang here on earth with the Toledo Interfaith Choir and we know she is lifting her voice in praise to the Most High now.

Many will say she was quiet, we say she was simply determined and strong willed rarely did she waste time debating her choices. She made them and lived the consequences with dignity and most often praise. When asked how she was doing she would say “I’m alright”.

We the children of Mother Day would like to send a special thank you to mom’s niece Yvonne Robinson. Thank you so very, very much Yvonne for extending God’s love and grace to make mom’s last wish to come home a reality. We will forever be so grateful for the time you devoted to her in her last days. Thank you for the tears we shared, hugs of comfort and the countless conversations. Mom will truly be missed. The tears we cry are those of joy. In the words of Michelle “I hear momma saying I've finally made it.”

Rest Mom you’ve journeyed a long time. You have left us many gifts, but we thank you most of all for introducing us to Christ. This is the gift that will keep us until we see you on the other side with smiles and giggles as you welcome us back into your arms.

We, the Executive Board, Officers and Members, of the Toledo Interfaith Mass Choir are deeply saddened by the homegoing of our late member, Sister Ruby (Porter) Day. We offer our condolences to her family, church family, friends, and all who knew and loved her. Sister Ruby Day sang in the tenor section of the Toledo Interfaith Mass Choir. Although she leaves behind a wonderful legacy; she will be truly missed. We pray that the family and friends will let the Lord be their comfort and guide.
