Our History

The House of Day Funeral Service traces its roots to 1964, when James and Dorothy Day founded Day Mortuary at 1325 Nebraska Avenue near Junction Street. Their vision was established during a pivotal time, as African American families were beginning to settle in what had historically been a Polish neighborhood. With dedication and compassion, they created a firm grounded in service, dignity, and respect for the community.
Their commitment to excellence became a family legacy. Their children, Michael and Cassandra, grew up immersed in the profession and later joined the business after completing their formal education in funeral service. Today, they carry forward the values instilled by their parents as part of a proud second generation, now joined by a third generation—Julius M. Moore, Michael Jr., and Brian Day, Sr.—continuing the tradition of care and service.
In 1975, Day Mortuary became known as The House of Day Funeral Service, reflecting its growth and expanding presence in the community. In 1990, the firm marked another milestone with the completion of a new 10,000-square-foot facility at 2550 Nebraska Avenue, situated in the heart of the University of Toledo corridor. This modern facility allows the family to better serve the community with enhanced amenities, including a spacious chapel, landscaped grounds, ample parking, and the newly acquired Scott Park Banquet Facility.
For decades, The House of Day Funeral Service has remained committed to providing exceptional service with attention to every detail. From professional presentation and uniformed staff to well-appointed vehicles and personalized arrangements, each service is thoughtfully designed to honor the life and memory of loved ones. Guided by faith, experience, and compassion, the Day family approaches every family they serve with genuine care and understanding.
Family owned and operated, The House of Day Funeral Service stands on a legacy of trust, integrity, and enduring service. “Our Family Serving Your Family” is more than a motto—it is a promise to continue serving the Toledo community and surrounding areas for generations to come.
