Mother Lurine Calhoun was born July 9, 1931 in Texarkana, Arkansas. She was the second of five children born to the late Hurley Johnson and Johnnie Mae Barnes. Mother Calhoun entered eternal rest on November 14, 2016 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo, Ohio.

Her family moved to Toledo at a very early age. During her childhood, she attended Gunckel Elementary and then graduated from Jesup W. Scott High School in 1949.

A few years later, she married the late Richard Calhoun Jr., and to this union they were blessed with three wonderful children: Mercedes Rena, Richard, and Rory.

Mother Calhoun worked at several Toledo schools as a supervisor of the cafeteria. She retired from Toledo Public Schools Food Service department in 1992.

Mother Calhoun accepted Christ at an early age. She was a devoted member of Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She served as a Missionary, Sunday School Teacher, member of the Mother Board, and a founding member of the Missionary City-Wide Fellowship. Mother Calhoun spoke all around Northwest Ohio professing her love for the Lord.

Mother enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s sporting events. She loved to shop especially for her hats. She was an excellent cook, specializing in her famous Macaroni and cheese, sweet potato pies, and Carmel cakes. Mother Calhoun would feed neighbors and friends in her community. She has been a mother, friend, teacher, confidant, and mentor to everyone who knew her.

Mother Calhoun leaves to cherish three children Mercedes commons, Richard Calhoun III, and Rory Calhoun all of Toledo, Ohio. Four Grandchildren, Christopher Commons (Kyatta) (Toledo, OH), Talesha Calhoun (Oklahoma City, OK), Sharise Calhoun (Pontiac, MI), and Sierra Calhoun (Toledo, OH). Four great-grandchildren, Aleyah Cherry, Kameryn, Kaidyn, and Christopher Jr. Commons.

Mother Calhoun was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Richard Calhoun Jr., Father Hurley Johnson, Mother Johnnie Mae Barnes. Sisters Mable Heath and Ora Lee Williams.

Family hour will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 19, 2016. Funeral Services will be following the wake at
11:00 am at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 3232 Nebraska Ave, Toledo, Ohio 43607. Reverend Jessie
Spears, Officiant.
