Obituary for Edna M Anderson-Akins (Anderson)

Edna Mae Akins was born on September 20, 1956 to the union of Sanford Lee Anderson, Sr. and Florence Ada (Clark) in Toledo, Ohio. She departed this earthly life at her home on Wednesday morning February 13, 2013. Edna enjoyed spending time with her family, church family and friends. She gave her life over to Christ at an early age under the teachings of the late Reverend H.M. Crenshaw at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, Toledo, Ohio where she sang in the Angelic choir and served on the kitchen committee. She has also fellowshiped with Morning Star, Trinity Faith Holiness, Friendship Baptist and Grace Presbyterian Churches. After a few stray moments, as some of us have, she realized her soul’s thirst for more learning of the Word of God and advancement in Him. She then recommitted her life to Christ under the teachings of Pastor Charles H. McBee at Family Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio. Although due to health declinations she was unable to stand and sing in the choir, her voice could be heard in the pews by those surrounding her. She loved to sit and listen to her gospel music and watch various gospel plays. She would always say as her mother would "Tyler Perry may not be right to some people but he gets the message out there". Edna attended Toledo Public Schools beginning with Ella P. Stewart then moving on to Picket Elementary and finally Edmund D. Libbey High School where during her years there she met Jerry D. Wormley. Out of this friendship came three children, Kaneisha, Katavia and Montrice. Although Edna did not graduate from high school she possessed many skills that led her to various positions with many companies. She also had a knack for hands on jobs as she created artificial floral arrangements for loved ones in her spare time. Just a few weeks ago she had begun crocheting a blanket with her grandchildren. Edna was joined in marriage to John H. Akins Sr. in 1988. From this union she gained several step-children and other relatives. Because of her loving nature she became a stay at home wife and cared for her husband until his demise in 1994. After his departure she returned to the work force and gained employment with Frostbite Inc., where she held a position as a line supervisor until her health declined. Even though her health was declining her loving heart allowed her to care for all of her grandchildren as they were her "babies". Edna was preceded in transition by her parents; sister Catherine King and god brother Jesse Edwards. She leaves precious memories to her children Kaneisha, Katavia and Montrice Akins; grandchildren Daija Akins, Alize' Harris, JaNae' Harris and Daijeonna Fletcher; siblings Robert (Evelyn) Anderson, Willie John Clark (Sandra), Alma Jean (Richard) VanHorn, Sheila L. Anderson, Sanford L. Anderson, Jr., Erwin L. Anderson, Sr., Laventa (Terry) Atwater II; Minnie R. Anderson; special niece Deborah Moore; best friend Olivia Coleman, and many, many more loved family and friends. The family wishes to thank all of you for your prayers, condolences and kind words of encouragement as we embrace the home going of our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Service will be held Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 6:00pm, wake at 5:00pm at Friendship Baptist Church, 5301 Nebraska Ave..
