Obituary for Sylvester Pettaway

Mr. Sylvester Pettaway passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020, at the age of 95, at Hospice of N.W. Ohio. He was born on August 20, 1924, in Camden, AL, to the union of Sam and Ada (Dallas) Pettaway.

Sylvester moved to Toledo, OH in the late 1930's.

Sylvester was a Combat Army Veteran, serving from 1943 to 1946, seeing action in the South Pacific.

He confessed his faith in Christ and was baptized at the Inspirational Baptist Church. Later, he joined and became a faithful member of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church. He served for 17 years, until his passing.

Sylvester worked for Rossford and Erie Ordinance Depot's until they closed. He retired from an Army Depot in Detroit after 30 plus years.

He leaves to cherish his memory, step-son, friend and great caregiver, Willie (Jimmy) Murchinson; three brothers, Robert (Lenora) Pettaway, of Miami, FL, Essie (Esther) Pettaway, of Toledo, OH, and Sam (Hazel) Pettaway, of Oregon, OH; and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends; special friends, Deacon Freddie Macon and Deacon LA Grant.
