SUNRISE: The Life of Ruby Samantha
RUBY SAMANTHA KIGHT

A royal baby girl made her entrance into the world in Tallapoosah, GA, on November 7, 1931. She was given the name of Ruby Samantha. Her parents, Cora and John Kight, welcomed the baby girl into a family that included siblings Arleene, Zadie, Frances, Evie, Bertha, Ruthie, Ernest and Willie. At the age of
17 along with her Mother and siblings moved to Toledo, Ohio, to start a new life.

Though challenged times, Ruby persevered by finding work at The Commodore Perry Hotel working in various capacities. Reminiscent of the movie The Help, this was a common practice for blacks who moved from the South at that time.

MRS. RUBY SAMANTHA WALKER

During this time she met and married the strikingly handsome, Alex Walker, Sr. This loving union brought them the joy of raising seven children. During this time, Ruby found gainful employment with The Toledo Board of Education until her retirement.

Understanding the need to continue a strong spiritual foundation, Ruby became a member Good News
Bible chapel of under the spiritual guidance of Pastor Blandine Walls.

Perhaps the greatest demonstration of Ruby’s courage was in how she maintained her strength, faith, through daily prayers and by pouring into her children and many others Words of Wisdom. Ruby found process, purpose, and prosperity. This unrelenting strength and truthful living prove to be her legacy today.

As a mother, Ruby always wanted the best for her children. She instilled in her children a set of strong educational goals that would empower them in the world. Ruby enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, telling stories of her youth. Ruby was also a jokester and was the life of every party

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me. For now I’m free. I’m following the path God has chosen for me. I took his hand when I heard him call. I turned my back and left it all
