Obituary

Mrs. Merry Helen Davis Hall rose for the world on March 28, 1922 when she opened her eyes. Born to Brodi and Elmo Macon, Merry was invaluable to all those that crossed her path. She left the south and settled here in Toledo working as a mixologist and domestic engineer while raising her children.

A resident of the Southside (projects) for over 50 years, she became valuable to every person she met. Big Mama was a true diva and wore many hats, literally. She enjoyed cooking, reading the “paper”, journaling, and was a very talented seamstress. When you entered her home you felt welcomed, and loved. You experienced her life coaching with her different sayings and phrases. She could sum up any situation and make it simple, plain, and her logic would make you shut up and think. She was quick witted and very good with money including yours.

Big Mama loved jewelry, ice cream sundaes with the nuts, pork rinds and every flavor of Peeps. She was famous for her mouth watering peach fried pies and biscuits. Big Mama loved all her grandchildren, great and great great grandkids. She kept track of all of us mostly with the pictures on her walls. She would consistently update them by switching the old photos for new ones. Her spirit lives on in everyone she met no matter how brief because in some way she just made you smile.

Big Mama accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist church under the leadership of Pastor Thomas J. Talmadge. She served on the usher board and was always visible by the hats she wore.

Big Mama is preceded in death by both parents, sister Ruthie B. Moore, two daughters Brodie M. Macon and Sandra K. Davis. She is survived by her children Mary K. Jamison, Betty J. McClain, Walter M. Davis, Dianna Davis, Tracie L. Davis, nephew Clarence Young Sr., step daughters Brenda Hall (Durhart) and Melinda Sutton, and special Goddaughter Priscilla Foster (Young). Big Mama also has 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and 17 great great grandchildren.

There is a host of other family, friends, and loved ones that made her 98 years iconic. Also, we must mention her best friends the “Golden Girls”, whom she loved dearly. Mrs. Merry Helen Hall was our Big Mama, our rock, and our world. She leaves a strong foundation and we will always cherish every moment of her fulfilling life.
