Obituary for Lawson Fitzgerald Murrell

Lawson Fitzgerald Murrell, "Master Tailor", affectionately known as Poppie, age 83, entered this life, October 13, 1936 and went home to be with the Lord, December 11, 2019. He transitioned quietly and peacefully in the confines of his home.

He came to the United States from Barbados over 60 years ago where he brought his tailoring skills. He was an avid business owner (L&L Tailoring 30 years) and shared his gift at establishments such as: Robert Hall's Men's Clothing, Black Knights, Damschroders, David's Custom Suits, and the Toledo Club to name a few. He loved spreading joy with others, particularly sharing his home spun words of wisdom. One of his favorite idioms was, "Your name is your life. You mess up your name, you mess up your life!" He lived in this truth, "Love." For Lawson, "L" meant loyalty, "O" - obligation, "V" - versatile, and "E" - ever. His entire life was cloaked in love, and he truly reflected the 4th and 5th verses of 1 Corinthians, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."

Lawson had many hobbies. Cricket was his game, and winning followed his name. He also enjoyed horticulture (gardening), swimming (particularly in the Atlantic Ocean), and last but not least, cooking exquisite Bajan cuisine. He loved to dance, particularly the limbo (hips included). These are some of the things he loved to share with his family, particularly his wife of 33 years, Leona Murrell. She was the one God would send to double his joy and make numerous memories. Family was important to him, and each member held a special place in his heart. For his children: Monica, Barbados memories; Nigel, work ethics; Jacqueline, her dependability; Juanita, love for family; Gary, male-bonding; Jamie, his dance partner; Lawson T., Mr. fix-it; Anthony, glass sparkle specialist; and Velinda, prayer warrior.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helena Murrell, sisters, Vivian Murrell and Phyllis Hoyte, brother, Livingston Murrell, and his daughter, Sandra Murrell.

He leaves to cherish his memories, loving wife, Leona A. Murrell, sons: Nigel (Virgie), Lawson T. (Kayla), Anthony Murrell, and Gerald Quin; daughters: Monica Sandiford, Jacqueline Quinn, Juanita (Melvin) Thomas, Jamey Dunlap, VeLinda (KP) Price, brothers: Harry (Michelle), Lionel (spouse), 19 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

While he spent his life creating custom-made clothing for others, he now has a new suit in glory; custom made, especially for him. Designed by God, made by the angels.
