Obituary for Kerri Kaye King (King)

Kerri Kaye King, age 49, was born on Fri., March 31st, 1972, at the former Medical College of Ohio (now UTMC) in Toledo, OH. She died on Thurs., June 3rd, 2021, at 4:45 p.m. at Toledo Hospital, losing her six-week battle with Covid-19 pneumonia.

“Kaye-Kaye” tested positive for Covid-19 on Fri., April 16, 2021, after a week of concerning symptoms, which included a persistent cough and worsening shortness of breath and was admitted to Toledo hospital on Sat., April 17. The final weeks of her life, Kerri remained on artificial ventilation. She fought to survive, but was not able to overcome the damage Covid-19 had inflicted on her lungs.

Kerri was a beautiful baby with delicate eyebrows, perfect lips, and flaming red hair, which drew attention and interesting speculations. Extremely bow-legged as a toddler, she wore braces for a period of time.

She went to the former Glenwood and St. Angela Hall elementary schools in Toledo. She attended DeVilbiss High School as a freshman and sophomore; and Hinckley High School in Aurora, Colorado, her junior year. She graduated from J.W. Scott High School in Toledo in 1990.

Kerri truly loved nursing. She took her work in healthcare seriously. Her patients and peers at work constantly complimented her dedication to her job. Kerri had found her calling. She attended Owens Community College to complete her associate’s degree in nursing, was duly licensed as a registered nurse on Dec. 15th, 2011.

Kerri raised her two sons, Lexus, age 28, and Aaron, age 18, as a single parent. She emphasized the importance of education to each of them. She proudly lived to see her oldest son, Lexus, receive a Bachelor’s Degree of
Science in Nursing from UTMC in 2018.

Her youngest son, Aaron, graduated as the 2021 valedictorian of his class at Toledo’s Horizon Science Academy. Kerri was unable to attend the graduation as she was hospitalized with Covid-19, but she was aware and so excited for Aaron’s accomplishment.

Kerri was a very social person with lots of loyal and loving family and friends. She loved an eclectic variety of music, and singing. She especially enjoyed attending Karaoke and listening to her vocally talented son, Lexus, perform.

Kerri Kaye was smart, witty, and fun-loving, with a quirky sense of humor. She had a memory “like an elephant.”. She was outspoken, honest, and direct. She loved to travel, she loved sewing, and she absolutely adored “Game of Thrones.”

Kerri is survived by her father, Daryll M. King (Karen); her mother, Anita M. Lewis-Sewell MD.; and her sons, Lexus Tre’von Clark and Aaron Lee Green.
