Obituary for Hubert Lee Lewis-Pitts

Hubert Lee Lewis, was born in Rosebud, Texas. The first born of 7 children to Annie Magnolia Collier-Lewis and Hubert Lee Lewis. She loved her father and was exceptionally proud to bear his name... she was always eager to share this clarifying story. Born the oldest child of a sharecropper, she knew the importance of hard work. With God as the foundation of her family she had great desire, determination and dedication to serve God, love others and pursue excellence through education.

Hubie was baptized when she was nine and began sharing her vocal gift of song in church. Her absolute, favorite
genre of music was gospel hymns, and whenever she sang, no matter the audience or occasion, one was sure to experience her heart and passion through her expressive, operatic vocals. As early as elementary school she
participated in oratorical contests and performed leading roles in theatrical productions throughout her high school and college years.

Hubert Lee Lewis Pitts graduated from Prairie View A & M College in Prairie View, Texas where she obtained a
Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. She later received a Masters of Education in Curriculum and
Instruction with an emphasis in Reading. She used her Education Specialist degree in Administration and
Supervision from the University of Toledo in various capacities throughout Toledo Public Schools, Director of Literacy Toledo-Head Start and the National Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Literacy Organization.

Upon moving to Toledo, Ohio in the early 60’s, one of her favorite past-times was spent gracing local concert stages as a member of the David Carter Symphonic Choir. She was also an amazing homemaker who gardened, canned, baked and sewed. She was a loyal and dedicated member and Trustee of the historical Third Baptist Church in central Toledo, for over 60 years, she remained active and attended as long as her health allowed through 2019 at the age of 90. She never passed up an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ, always willing and ready to serve and offer prayer to anyone in need.
