Obituary for Charlene Diane Squirewell

Sister Charlene passed away in the early morning, on Tuesday, Dec.,08, 2020, at the Toledo Hospital. Charlene was born on March 18, 1953, to Georgia and Charlie Squirewell, of Detroit, MI. She attended Detroit City schools as a child, and upon graduating from high school, she went to Lansing, MI, where she attended the Michigan School for the Blind. There, she received typing and other office skills.

On July 1, 1975, Charlene married her childhood sweetheart, Johnnie Phillip Payton. They resided in Toledo, Ohio, and had two loving sons, Johnny Phillip Payton, Jr. and Christion James Payton. Later, Charlene completed coursework at the University of Toledo for transcriptionist, and worked as a medical transcriptionist, and in general office administration. She had an unwavering faith in God. She became an ordained minister in the Church of God in Christ in the late 1990’s. Charlene was a loving mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and so much more to many, and she will truly be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Johnny Phillip Payton, Jr. (Sept. 2006); brother, Calvin Jones, Anniston, AL; and her sister Julia (Judy) Patterson, Detroit, MI. Charlene is survived by her ex-husband, who was her primary care provider, Johnny Phillip Payton, Sr.; son, Christion James Payton; brother-in-law, Johnny Patterson, Detroit, MI; sister-in-law, Virginia Payton, Toledo, OH; sister-in-law, Gracie Taylor, Detroit, MI; brother-in-law, James Payton, Jr., Toledo, OH; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and great nieces and nephews.

The Payton family would like to thank all of Charlene’s doctors, nurses, and other health care staff, who so caringly assisted and supported her throughout her cancer treatments and other services. We especially thank Terri and Jill. We are grateful from the bottom of our hearts.
