Obituary for Carmelita Lizette Martin

Carmelita Lizette Martin (affectionately known as "Carmy and Carmen"), who was a customer experience specialist, resolving problems and exceeding customer expectations in several industries, transitioned on May 15, 2021, at ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. She was 58.

Carmelita was born in the 60s, a time of transformational change for the country and grew up in the epicenter of black culture and black business in Toledo. A very bright and precocious child, Carmelita's early life was filled with rich experiences and successes including playing the piano and receiving many academic accolades. She had a spirit of service, beginning her first job at 14, performing errands for seniors. She was very meticulous with any project at hand. Friends remarked, "She had an infectious laugh that always put you at ease." Later in life, Carmelita took up the hobby of baking and blessed family and friends with decadent desserts. Always the thoughtful "giver," Carmelita could give the perfect gift to anyone, knowing exactly what you needed before you knew you needed it.

Carmelita Lizette Martin was born on February 20, 1963, in Gadsden, Alabama. Her father, James, was a machine operator at General Motors Powertrain; her mother, Juanita (Dozier) Martin, was a social worker supervising in Adult Protective Services at Lucas County Department of Jobs and Family Services.

Carmelita grew up in Toledo, OH, and graduated from Rogers High School, before attending the University of Toledo. Carmelita graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems and later completed graduate coursework at Bowling Green State University.

Carmelita left the Information Technology industry in the early 2000s. For a short time she worked in retail, before taking a role in the communications industry as a customer experience representative with Buckeye Broadband.

Carmelita loved to travel, somewhat of a thrill seeker, debater of politics, shopping aficionado, foodie and many, many other things including intellectual, daughter, sister, aunt, Christian and most importantly giver. At a young age, Carmelita affirmed her belief in Christ at Ascension Lutheran Church and through her transition demonstrated the greatest gift by being an organ donor. Carmelita's time between her bookends was to teach us how to give.

Carmelita is survived by her parents, James and Juanita Martin; sisters, Birdena Martin and Monica (Harold) Ford; brother, Sean (Victoria) Martin; nephews, Austin Cole and Robert "Bobby" Martin; and Godmother, Ann Brown; uncles; Eugene Dozier and Donald Martin, Sr., Aunts; Wanda (Martin) Moore and Sandra Martin, a host cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Herman and Elma (Johnson) Martin; and her maternal grandparents, Olen and Inez (Vinson) Dozier.
