On November 2, 2018 Michael Haywood Bates was called home. He was born to Rushell Davis-Bates and Haywood Bates. During his life, Michael was a Navel Veteran and spent his final years in a career that allowed him to crisscross the country that he loved. Michael had a caring heart and strong opinions. He was a life long activist and promoted civic participation in the political process.

Michael was proud of the 14 years of sobriety he enjoyed at the end of his life and all of the relationships that were repaired and strengthened as a result.

On July 1, 2017 Michael married his best friend, Paulette Mason-Bates.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Deri Ray Buie. He is susrvivied by his wife, their 15 children, Talya M. Bates (Michael Gary Bump), Solya Buie, Michael Garnett Sr, Ellencia Marie Garnett (Philip Wiley), Michael Bates Jr. (Victoria B. Bell), Brandon Schley, Christopher Schley, Chandra Schley, Deja Rena Buie-Terrell (Andrea Terrell), Eric Napie Sr. (Katecia Starks), Natashia Dotson, Rashawn Odoms, Jonathon Dotson, and Ivin Coley; and their combined 42 grandchildren, with one on the way.
