Obituary for Calvin Joseph Lawshe

Calvin's life on this earth is over and he is now resting in the arms of Our Lord, and Savior Jesus Christ. For it is scripture, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. He is now surrounded by the love ones who have gone before him.

Calvin was the first born to Calvin and Josephine (Smith) Lawshe on Friday, January 24, 1947 at Mercy Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He was preceded in death by both parents: Calvin Lawshe and Josephine C. Moore; a sister, Lynette Lawshe and a brother, Demory Lawshe.

Calvin always stood tall and was a large presence to his siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and long time friends. Within the first 10 years of his life, he became the big brother to 4 brother and 3 sisters and took pleasure in reminding each that he was The Oldest and he did not hesitate to let it be known that he was in charge.

Calvin was educated in the Toledo Unified School System. He first entered Washington Elementary and then transferred to Sherman Elementary. Calvin loved playing street basketball with his fellow Northside Boys. He was a 1965 graduate of Macomber Vocational High School where he excelled in basketball becoming one of the top scoring players as well as one of the best high jumpers in the region. Calvin elected to study locally and signed with the University of Toledo (UT) on an athletic scholarship. He received a Bachelors Degree and two Masters Degrees in Business Administration. Calvin served as a professor of Business Technologies and closed his tenure as Assistant to the President for Community Relations and Interim Vice President for Student Services. He retired in 2002 from UT after serving nearly 30 years.

Upon retirement, Calvin went to work for the City Planning Commission. Under the administration of Mayor Micheal Bell, he served as Director of the Toledo- Lucas County Plan Commission from 2007-2012. In 2013, Mayor, Paula Hicks- Hudson, engaged Calvin to be the Director of Economic Development for the City of Toledo. Calvin was a public servant who cared about his city and a leader who cared about other people.

Calvin had a deep love for sports. He dearly loved basketball, football and track. When he could no longer play he coached. Calvin was one of three who coached several intercity basketball teams under the Amateur Athletic Union. In 2008, Calvin was inducted into the Toledo City Athletic League Hall of Fame for basketball.

He was a dedicated member of Perfecting Church Toledo under the pastoral leadership of Bishop Marvin L. Winans, Calvin was also a member of, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Boule) and Amazon Masonic Lodge, #4, Prince Hall Affiliate. He served on various boards and was a member of several organizations in the City of Toledo and Lucas County.

Calvin leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife, Vicki Lawshe; two daughter, Kamaria (Floyd) Boatman, Kara Lawshe-Fullen; on son, Lance (Zukeya) Lawshe; 5 grandchildren, Aysha Lawshe, Cole Fullen, Isiah Lawshe, Kyle Fullen and Lynette Lawshe; two sisters, Emma (Lawrence) Wardlaw, Carol Cole, Three Brothers, Charles (Michelle) Cole, David Lawshe and Larry (Machaud) Lawshe; a step-mom, Eva Lawshe; 3 aunts Mary Wilkins, Betty Syph, Shirley Smith and a host of nephews, nieces and many friends.
