Obituary for Nancy Jean Roberts

Nancy Jean Roberts
Her hands held us gently from the day we took our first breath. Her hands helped to guide us as we took our first steps. Her hands held us close when the tears would start to fall. Her hands were quick to show us she would take care of it all. She loved her children dearly; each one in a different way. You earned those wings dear "Mother" and an eternal place in our hearts to stay.

Our precious mother, Nancy Jean Barnett-Roberts, was born to the union of, Allen, Sr. and Agnes Barnett, on January 7, 1938, in Toledo, Ohio. She was the ninth of ten 10 siblings, the "baby girl", as she was lovingly referred to by her siblings. She was called to rest on, Sunday, April 29, 2018, and reunited in "love" with her mother, Agnes Barnett, who too, took her wings on, April 29, 2003.

No "love" is stronger than that of a mother, welcoming her child home for eternal rest.

In her youth, Nancy Jean, was a faithful member of, True Vine Missionary Baptist Church, along with her mother and siblings.

Nancy attended Riverside Elementary, and graduated in 1956, from Calvin M. Woodard High School. While attending high school, she was a volunteer candy striper, at St. Vincent Medical Center. She attended the University of Toledo taking courses in Elementary Education. She found employment at Rossford Ordinance, and later at Willy Jeep, moving on to Ford Motor Company, as a Key Punch Operator, at all of these sites. In her later years, she went to work as a secretary at Arlington By the Lakes, retiring in 2006.

In her mid-twenties, she met and married her ex-husband, Wilbur Roberts, to this union, four children were born: Shawn, Todd, Tyler and Lillie. Before Nancy Jean became a wife and a mother, she was known by her "Goose Hill", to family and friends, she was a "Free Spirit".

She was admired by her nieces, nephews and kids in the neighborhood, as what would be referred to today as a "Trend Setter". There were not many young black women, who were single at that time, that could be seen driving their own Cadillac convertible, with the fish tails. Not even some men could pull that off. She is the spark in the family that made her nephews, Leon and Jimmy, want to own their own Cadillac's, once they came of age.

Nancy was known for her stylish haircuts, and her fashion presence, during her days as a single, black woman. She was seen around town with her top down, hair being tossed, blowing her car horn and waving her hand as she sped by, a sight to "behold". To a lot of the young women growing up, she was an independent Black Woman who did not work menial laborer, but in Corporate America, she was a "Key Punch Operator"". In the 50's, 60s, and 70s, most women of color were either housewives or domestics or in arduous other forms of employment.

Nancy loved the fact that she was a grandmother and a great grandmother. She loved spending time with them all. She also loved listening to the Blues and Jazz, and spending time talking to her brother Jamie, about the numbers AKA the Lotto and also playing some. She also loved her M&M candies and cartoons.

Preceding her in death are both parents; sister, Edna Snodgrass; brother, Curtis Barnett, Sr.; 1 niece, Cynthia Harper and 1 nephew, Leon Barnett, Sr.

Nancy leaves to cherish her precious memories, sons, Shawn (Lorraine), Todd (Sheila) and Tyler (Kim) Roberts; daughter, Lillie (Steve) Brown; 9 grandchildren, Tyler Roberts, Jr., Christopher Roberts, Toshay Roberts, Taneisha Brown, Anthony Roberts, Shanequa Brown, Steven Brown, III., Braxton Roberts, and Dasani Brown, 6 great grandchildren; siblings, Belzora Duhart, Lillie Johnson (sister/friend), Sylvester Barnett, and Allen Barnett, Jr. (brother/friend).

Special thank you you to niece, Linda Barnett-Cummings and acknowledgement and gratitude to our sister Kitty for her endless love and sacrifices.
