Gladys Lee Mitchell (Sherman)
Obituary of Gladys Lee Sherman, Mitchell

Gladys Lee Mitchell (Sherman) was born March 11, 1932 in Wallace, North Carolina to loving parents, Rusher and Luzenia Sherman. She is the oldest of four children. As a little girl she was very responsible and obedient child. Her mother trusted her to take care of her sister, Olivett and brothers, James and Robert. When they were young, the family moved to Wilmington, North Carolina. Gladys was reared and educated in Wilmington and worked outside of the home at the age of thirteen years old. She was self-motivated and loved music and singing. At the age of twelve years old she took piano lessons twice a week for fifty cents per lesson. She loved flowers and gardening much like her grandmother, Agnes Sherman.
In 1938, she received the gift of the Holy Ghost at the age of six years old. She loved and feared the Lord Jesus and wanted to please Him.
She met the love of her life, Carl Eddis Mitchell, Sr. in 1945 in Wilmington, North Carolina.  Carl asked her father for her hand in marriage and after three (3) years of courtship, this was a marriage made in heaven.  They were happily married on December 20th, 1948. Their first child was born February 8, 1950. He was healthy 9 lb. boy and they named him Carl Eddis, Jr.   In March of 1951, she, her husband and son moved to Toledo, Ohio where the other three children were born; Bruce Cerdan, Thomas Gregory and Cynthia Marie.
In 1951, she was employed at St. Vincent Hospital as a Nurse’s Aid.  Also, she worked for Secor Hotel and Hillcrest Hotel. In 1957, Gladys and Carl started their own business, which was a thrift store on Dorr St.  The rest of Mother Mitchell’s life she worked in the service of the Lord.
In July 1957, she and her family joined the Church of the Living God under the pastorate of her mother, Elder Luzenia and father, Elder Rusher Sherman.  In 1960, Carl and Gladys were baptized in the Name of Jesus. Bishop and Mother Mitchell felt the calling of the Lord to lead His people. Three years later Bishop Carl Mitchell, Sr. along with his wife by his side was appointed as pastor under Apostle W.J. Petersen of The Pentecostal Church of God, from 1960 to 1963. Mother Gladys Mitchell started the first choir in the church in 1960, and was the first musician as well.
In 1963, Bishop Mitchell decided to go independent moved the church to his home at 1114 Palmwood Ave. with Mother Mitchell, Sis. Anna Lewis and their children. In 1963, the church moved into their first building at the Fish Market on 118 E. Bancroft St. and the name was changed to Apostolic Household of Faith. In 1968 the church moved to a Bowling Alley at 737 N. Detroit Ave., where the church continue to grow with the help of the Lord and until they had to look for another facility.  They put their request before the Lord and God honored their prayers and they purchased the mansion on 2022 Waite Ave and the church joyfully marched to their new building and moved in on November 1, 1970. Bishop and Mother Mitchell wanted a Christian school to train and educate young boys and girls and they opened their first school on September 6, 1980 called Bibleway Christian Academy on 2022 Waite Ave.  The Church and the school increased and Bishop and Mother Mitchell asked the Lord to provide another facility to house the school and the church. Mother Mitchell found out that the Jewish Temple was up for sale by Toledo Public Schools and the Lord blessed that they were the only bidder on the building. Again, the Lord gave them their heart’s desire and they purchased 2335 Collingwood Blvd.  The church gladly marched again on November 1, 1981 to their new edifice on Collingwood Blvd. God continue to show favor and honored them and increased the ministry greatly over the years. Bishop Carl E Mitchell, Sr. and Mother Gladys Mitchell are the founders of Bibleway Temple. Mother Mitchell’s entire life has been centered in and around working for God, His people and the church.
One of mother’s favorite interests is missionary work. She has traveled to Port-au-Prince, Haiti with missionary, Sis. Jean Lewis. Her first revival was in Port-au-Prince where she sponsored her fourth son, Yves Jonas, from Haiti to the United States years ago. She traveled to Paris France, Israel, Rome, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Africa.
In 1987, she administered a homeless program, turning the church at Waite and Grand Avenue into a home for the homeless called “Open Arms”.   Mother Gladys Mitchell was truly a hard worker and if you were around her you would be working too!  After Bishop Carl E. Mitchell, Sr. went home to be with the Lord she was blessed to have her son Pastor Bruce C. Mitchell, Sr. (wife Lady Karen Mitchell) to take over the ministry and to lead the great people of God.  After Pastor Bruce Mitchell, Sr., went home to be with the Lord, Pastor Moses White became the interim Pastor of Bibleway Temple and then Pastor Jermaine McCallum became the Senior Pastor. Mother desired to have the church at 2335 Collingwood back with the founders and she said that God made her a promise that the church will return.  Our God is true to His promises and her request came to pass the church on 2335 Collingwood Blvd. came back to her by the mighty hand of God. Now Bishop Thomas Mitchell (wife Lady Vester Mitchell) are now Pastor and co-pastor of the Bibleway Temple and Mother Mitchell was blessed once again to see another son carry-on the work of the Lord.  Mother Gladys Mitchell became the “Overseer” of the Bibleway Temple. Now she is able to rest from her labors. We believe that the Lord said to her, Well done my good and faithful servant enter into the Joy of the Lord where there is no more pain, no more sorrows, no more disappoints. In the song by Mahalia Jackson it will be “howdy howdy and never goodbye.”
Mother Mitchell is reunited with her loving husband Bishop Carl E. Mitchell in the heavens and eternally they will be together.  A true Love story made in the heavens!
