Obituary for Percy Johnson Sr.

Percy Johnson was born December 10, 1930 in Demopolis, Alabama to the late Willie and Laura Pettaway Johnson. He was affectionately known by his "CB" handle "Striking Cobra 510." He served his country and was honorably discharged, as a rifleman, in the United States Army.

Percy retired after 30 years of service from the City of Toledo, working as a Street Caretaker in the Division of Streets. He was a diligent and faithful worker providing for his family.

Percy had a genuine passion for hunting, fishing, and talking on his "CB". He could almost always be found sitting at the end of the dinner table reading the newspaper or watching baseball or boxing until he fell asleep.

We will always remember him for his stern and loving "look". Those that knew him knew "the look" meant business, and he didn't have to utter one word. Percy was the strength and backbone of the family. He was instrumental in bringing his parents from the South, and he was a provider for his entire family. He was a father figure not only to his children, but also to many of his grandchildren as well. He loved collecting rifles, and he was often seen polishing and shining every one of them. Percy was a member of Composite Lodge 108, and he was also a Shriner.

Percy accepted Christ at a very early age, and he united with Northwestern Missionary Baptist Church; where he was a faithful member before his health began to fail. Percy and Anna Johnson were joined in Holy Matrimony on December 3rd, 1952. To this union, eight children were born.

Percy made his transition from death to eternal life on February 10, 2017 at Fairview Skilled and Nursing Center with family lovingly by his side. He persevered and fought the battle with failing health for eleven years before departing this life.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Willie and Laura Pettaway Johnson, sons; Stephen, Glenn, and Damon, brothers; Fred and Ward, sisters; Ruby and Virginia "Maggie".

He leaves to survive and to cherish his memories his loving and faithful wife Anna Johnson, sons; George Morgan (Selma, Alabama), Retired Master Sergeant Lawrence (Theresa) Johnson III (Jacksonville, North Carolina), Percy Johnson Jr. and Karl Johnson; both of (Toledo, Ohio); daughters Stephanie (Barry) Howard (Toledo, Ohio), Bernice Johnson (Selma, Alabama), Renee Johnson (Toledo, Ohio), Margaret Ann Griffin (Selma, Alabama), brothers; John (Ethel)Johnson (Toledo, Ohio), sisters; Geneva (Robert) Moore (Toledo, Ohio), Ella (Richard; deceased) Singer (Toledo, Ohio), sister in law; Frankie Johnson (Toledo, Ohio); 26 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and a host of great great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
