Obituary for Gloria Layson

Funeral services are 11:00 am Wednesday, May 18, 2016 preceded by wake services at 10:30 am at Braden U.M. Church. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 - 7:00pm at The House of Day Chapel. Gloria Layson, peacefully passed away Wednesday, May, 11, 2016 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. She was a Toledo native and community activist. Gloria accepted the challenge to evangelize and teach God's word by serving as a Certified Lay Minister at Braden United Methodist Church. Gloria received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Toledo and worked as a LPN for over 24 years. After leaving her career in nursing, she was the founder and administrator of the PASS intermediate charter school. She also started Mothers' Outraged Against Drugs (MOAD); an organization established to address the public outcry over the drug use and violence in her community. She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Mildred Liggens, sister, Josephine Liggens, son, Corey Layson and daughter Vivian Rodriquez. Gloria is survived by daughters, Stacy Powell of Pittsburgh, PA, and Jacquelyn Layson of Toledo, 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Spencer Liggens, Toledo and sister, Rosa Liggens of Tucson, AZ; aunt, Naomi Pretlow of Philadelphia, PA and many beloved family members and friends. Family and friends will be received Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 5-7 p.m., at the House of Day Funeral Home, 2550 Nebraska Ave., Toledo, Ohio 43607. A brief public viewing will be held Wednesday, May18, 2016 at 10:30am with funeral services scheduled to begin promptly at 11am at Braden United Methodist Church, 4725 Dorr Street, Toledo, Ohio.
