Obituary for George "Mr Big Stuff" Allen

The services are 11:00am Saturday, December 27, 2014 preceded by wake services at 10:00am at Braden United Methodist Church. George Allen, 78, of Toledo, Ohio passed away Saturday, December 20, 2014 at his home. He was a devoted Christian and lifelong member of Braden United Methodist Church whose faith and love for Jesus Christ was the core of his very being and the center of his life. George’s entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation that drove many continued years of success. He pursued career(s) as an independent truck driver of 15 years, and self-operated a cleaning business for Mortgage Investors Corp. for 41 years. George’s vision of owning his own business, Mr. Big Stuff’s Plantation Bar-B-Que, began 30+ years ago and is still operating today, located on Dorr near Reynolds. His succulent barbeque sauce impacted the taste buds of countless consumers throughout Toledo and in places such as the Erie Street Market, The East Side at International Park, and the former Northtown Mall. George was famously known as “Mr. BIG STUFF” and by his original quote(s) such as “Barbeque taste so good, make you wanna slap yo momma” and “Our insurance covers eating the meat, not swallowing the bone”. His barbeque vision continues through his son Rod Allen, and grandsons John Jr. and Vincent Fitzgerald. George also owned George Allen & Son Painting company, for interior and exterior design, servicing Toledo and Ottawa Hills for over 20 years. Rod is still carrying on this family business. Beyond his business ventures, George also dedicated 30 years of service to BTL of Toledo as a Senior Machine Operator. George’s hobbies included spending time with family, bowling, and “TV coaching” the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Cavaliers. George was preceded in death by parents Wilson and Emantha Allen, brothers Sylvester Allen and Louis Allen Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years Mary L. Allen, sons Roderick V. (Patricia) Allen, George Montgomery Allen, daughters Pamela (Dion) Cummings, and Cassandra Allen. Special grandsons John (Amber) Fitzgerald Jr. and Vincent Fitzgerald, two grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Brother Carlton Herbert Allen, two sisters Morell Fonfield and Ruby C. Hill. A host of other loving cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, kind friends, and ALL of Toledo. The Allen family extends their love and sincere appreciation to all friends and family for your kind words, thoughts, prayers, and gifts. A special thank you to Wildwood Dialysis and Kish Transportation for your excellent service. We are very grateful for the special care you provided. Funeral services will be held on Saturday December 27, 2014 at 11am proceeded by a 10am wake at Braden United Methodist Church. Please sign the register book at
