Obituary for Eva Mae Oxner (Stoudamire)

Eva Oxner service will be Saturday, March 29th at 11:00am at Abundence Life Ministries. Visitation Friday ffrom 6:00pm-9:00pm at the House of Day Chapel. Mother Eva Mae Oxner, 91 years old, departed this life on Sunday, March 23, 2014 at Kingston Rehabilitation Center of Sylvania. Eva was the third child born to the union of James Preston and Pleasant Stoudamire in Pine Bluff, AK on May 16, 1922. As a young child, Eva and her family moved from Arkansas to Oregon State where her father worked the railroad and her mother taught African American children in her home. She was seven when they moved to Toledo and settled on Canton Ave. Those who remember Eva as a child know that she was a solid baseball player and pitched and batted with her left hand. Some may even recall that she was known to “box” on occasion. Eva attended Sherman Elementary School and was a proud graduate of Scott High School. In 1940, Eva married Toliver Oxner and together they had seven children, David, Patricia, Toliver, Sharon, Dennis, Dale, and Kimberly. Mother Oxner loved the Lord with all of her heart, and was a lifelong member of the Church of God In Christ. She accepted Christ at the early age of 17 under the pastoral guidance of Elder Holmes. When Elder Holmes could be found preaching downtown, Mother and other members would be singing alongside. Mother loved singing congregationals, and it was no secret that she knew every verse of any song. We can all think back on our favorite Mother Oxner lead songs like “I’m Saved”. Mother was a prayer warrior and studied her Bible daily. She was an active member in the church and was on the senior mother’s board, adult usher board, senior choir, radio ministry, and YPWW. She was also the church secretary, a Sunday school teacher, and a licensed missionary. One of Mother’s greatest pleasures was attending the Holy Convocation each year in Memphis, TN. Upon her death, she was member of the Rock of Praise C.O.G.I.C Although Mother Oxner wore many hats in her lifetime, her most cherished was wife and mother. One fact many of you don’t know was that Mother was part of a Christian Quartet and wanted to travel with the band. She chose to stay home to raise her family. She enjoyed watching her soaps, Jeopardy, and Wheel of Fortune as much as she enjoyed baking for her family and friends. We looked forward to her yeast rolls, and tins filled with chocolate chip cookies and pecan balls every year for Christmas. Mother Oxner was preceded in death by Toliver Oxner, her husband of 43 years, children Kimberly, Patricia Ann, Toliver Eugene, and Dale Oxner, sister Pressie Blakley, and brothers James and Melvin Stoudamire. Mother Oxner was loved and adored by many. She leaves to mourn her children David Sr., Sharon, and Dennis (Jennifer), grandchildren Jeffrey, Kimberly, David Jr., Vickie, Stacey, Stephanie, and Aaron, 13 great grandchildren, 9 great-great grandchildren, nieces Carol, Lynn, and Debbie (Green), nephews Warner and James, and a host of extended family members and friends.
